Been there, done that and then I discovered cheap PCB manufacturers.
I used some vero board to prototype a design last week and that was the first time I have used the stuff for well over a year now. Took me ages to find the damn track cutter.
I think it’s only cheap as long as you don’t add all the modules a Cobra II has onboard:
SD, ENC28, USB C, USB H, …
