Preview of GHI NETMF v4.2 and Gadgeteer installers package

Gus and the entire team: Again, as always, delivered as promised. What a standard of service and R&D.
Many thanks.

Hi

Can’t update the Hydra through the GUI:
-- Log –
Connecting to device… Fail.
Please wait for trying to reconnect…
Cannot see Hydra over serial port. Try to restart computer and reset Hydra
or visit GHI Electronics – Where Hardware Meets Software for manual update.
Ping doesn’t see the Hydra either…

Led in On, Windows does its sounds when inserting and removing the USB cable.

MFDEPLOY automatically displays FEZ Hydra_Gadgeteer in the USB channel, but then says when pinging
Pinging… Error: No response from device
Have I cooked the Hydra?

HELP!!

@ Gus

This is related to premium library (spider) or all the boards are included ?

@ Gabriel3 -

To make sure Hydra Updater work, make sure that:

  • If Hydra is running firmware, you can ping it by MFDeploy
  • If Hydra was erased, make sure you can see a new COM port in Device Manager.
  • If you are in tinymode, you have to use SD or wire to erase its flash first, then you will see a new COM port in Device Manager. We will improve this case so users don’t need SD / wire anymore, but now Hydra Updater only supports the first and second case.

What should you do if you can not Ping while Hydra firmware is running? There are some ways but I usually use 2 ways below:

  • You can Disable ā€œGHI.NET MicroFramework USB Debugging interfaceā€, → disconnect Hydra → wait few seconds → re-connect Hydra → Enable ā€œGHI.NET MicroFramework USB Debugging interfaceā€.
  • Or: Power off Hydra → restart your PC, try to ping again. :))
What should you do if you did click on Update button of Hydra Updater but it reports that failed and you also don’t see COM port on Device Manager?
  • There is a Help link, inside that Help link, there are 3 options, you can chose one of them.

With current version Hydra Updater that you are using, you can update from 4.1 up to 4.2 or 4.2 to 4.2. If you are in 4.2 and want to go back 4.1, you should use update manually.

Dat, I’m lost (and starting to sweat)…

Funny. when I had 4.1 software there was no problem…

Yes, when you had 4.1 there should no problem,. It just has problem if you had 4.2 then come back 4.1, I think.
Anyway, does it work now?

You can always do manual update, which is linked from the updater error message.

Dat, Gus - thanks.
So now I’m in the IDE, looking to start diving into 4.2, and THERE’S NO SEEED MODULES!
There were in the 4.1 release… How can I use NetMF 4,2, GHI’s SDK 4.2 (beta, I know) and the accelerometer or gyro?

Thanks

Correct. Look at release notes  we never said they are there. We emails seeed about updating their drivers with 4.2 but no answer so far. Please contact them to help speed this up.

Indeed. Going to send an email to SEEED right away and post in their (not so active) forum.

By the way, in order to use the ENC28 with 4.2 beta:

  1. Is it supported? Any drivers?
  2. Concerning the Hydra firmware - still have to do the ā€œswitch the firmwareā€ game?

Thanks

If you’re feeling adventurous, the source for the Seeed 4.1 drivers is available at http://gadgeteer.codeplex.com/. You could download the source for the desired driver, and convert it for 4.2. Depending on which module, it might be straightforward enough to be worthwhile, rather than waiting for the updated drivers.

@ GUS - I misspoke. The community over there is thriving.
Anyways, I left a post (http://www.seeedstudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3397) and here is the (not so encouraging) answer another community member got (http://www.seeedstudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3378).
I shouldn’t have bot all the sensor modules. Their are now great (extremely light) paper weights.

@ devhammer - adventurous - yes. Know what the #@ $#@ $@ I’m doing - not so much. See Gus’s answers to my elementary school questions. These guys practically are holding my hand:

How do I turn on the computer? I have no idea! I’M LOST! And the button I keep pressing does this ā€œSKEEESHā€ sound and then all I had displayed dissappears! HELP!
@ Gabriel - To turn on the computer, press the ā€œonā€ key, it’s the one which has the label ā€œonā€. And the button you have been pressing is on the toilet. Stop doing that.
I’d appreciate GHI’s stand on the ENC28 questions above.

Thanks

Give Seeed a chance. I don’t blame them. I have tried to write a driver for one of my modules on 4.2. I wasted a full day trying to figure out why comms was wonky, turns out that I2C on the Cerberus threw in an extra byte that didn’t come from the module. When I tried with last weeks removed Hydra 4.2, I2C didn’t work at all. It is hard to write drivers when you don’t know if it is your driver messing up or the underlying hardware…

So i’m sure that they will have drivers out within a week after 4.2 goes stable…

Hi,
I’ve been trying with a VB Project and using the FEZ Spider.

I found one issue with the Auto-generated resources code: Resources.Designer.vb

It wraps the code in Namespace {Project Name} which is what is expected in C#, but breaks the code in VB. A work around is to just remove the Namespace from the auto generated file and it will compile code that tries to use things like:

_statBitmap.DrawText("HP", Resources.GetFont(Resources.FontResources.tyrannt), Colors.Yellow, 2, 38)

can i use 4.2 with the fez starterskit ? i an used to vb.net

Which fez starterkit?

sorry the FEZ Spider Starter Kit

Yep, you can, if you don’t need Ethernet or Wifi…

okay thank you
