Milky Way over Mauna Kea

This timelapse video makes you appreciate how huge the universe truly is.

And for the curious, the yellow lasers allow astronomers to measure the distortion caused by the upper atmosphere and calibrate it out of their optics.

Yeah, it kinda boggles the mind to realize that when you see the Milky Way, you’re looking at our galaxy edge-on.

I just got back from Hawaii last week. Being into astronomy it is an amazing place to go observe. I only wish ISON had survived. I was all set for some great pictures on top of Haleakala. Up there you can see satellites fly overhead with the naked eye.
