This is horrible news for all those involved. I hope that many can go on to ply their trade in new, innovative and successful ways.

Probably not completely unexpected. There must have been a lot of overlap roles after the purchase of Nokia.
18,000 is a little more then the Nokia overlap but Microsoft needed a bit of trimming anyways, but now the question is can they identify what needs to be trimmed and what need to stay. That said however I hope that Satya Nadella has a pair or can grow a pair and resist some of his directors desires of cashing the company out for their personal gain.
