GT-511C3 VMF Fingerprint Scanner Module

Bwahahaha! Guess who got their module last night!

I managed to weasel out a module in exchange for porting the driver to Gadgeteer! And boy was that a bargin!

After I was done turning the sweet blue light on and off I got round to the meat and potatoes of the module. This thing stores up to 200 fingerprints at once, can throw you scan data without saving, give you a grayscale image of a scan (in 2 different modes), detect fingers (actual fingers too, try as I might it refused to scan Eve’s nose), and is bang on reliable.

How reliable, you ask? I ran 300+ tests with 4 sets of hands, my 2 feet and even some counter measures I know like pressing down on cellophane to fool the sensor. I got 0, count them ZERO, false reads.

I’m sending out the driver to Versa Module tomorrow and I’ll be putting up a video as well. Look for the module on Versa’s site and mine. Betcha they put it on Creations too.

Am I over selling this? Maybe. But I seriously did spend HOURS just playing with it because its that dang cool.

Great review . It is excellent news to hear it works so well. But now you’ve triggered something in me… I WANT one too now… Thanks for the great review and for writing a driver for it.

I believe Versa will have it available soon. Driver is ready but I need to double-check a few things with them (basic stuff like I have an image they like, the right name & copyright info, etc)

These are now ready.

For Gadgeteer applications, grab one from: http://www.skewworks.com/nanovmf/

For non Gadgeteer applications you can get it from us. http://versamodule.com/nano_vmf.html

There is no difference in the boards from either place. There are jumpers on the board for configuration. We want to help promote Skewworks work for making the driver for Gadgeteer and fund his efforts, which buying a module from him does just that.
