Gadgeteer 485 module schematic doesn't match the picture

So, I’m starting to play with 485 and just noticed that:

a) The 485 gadgeteer module schematic shows it having 1 line buffer (U1).

b) But the image shows it having 2 line buffers (U1 and U2)

Questions:
Which one is right: Schematic or picture?

What is the purpose of the buffer if the MAX13487 has a state machine to auto switch between RX/TX?

The buffer is only needed on the receive line. The engine mistakenly add one on the transmit line, which is safe but wasted an unneeded buffer.
