Second question is the documentation correct on documentation page https://www.ghielectronics.com/docs/340/through-hole-developers-guide . It states at the bottom of the page:

Why would I want to apply 3.3V power to the ground hole?

@ scardinale -

Why would I want to apply 3.3V power to the ground hole?

You are taking the instructions too literal. A 3.3V power supply has two terminals, a ground and a 3.3V. To power the board, you have to connect both.

@ Mike - My point is if one takes it literally, one would have connected 3.3VDc to the ground plan.

Fortunately, I know better than that.

I feel that it should be rephrased to make it a little more clear.

The sentence in questions says “Even with USB connected, you must connect a 3.3V power supply to the 3.3V and GND holes.”

It says connect a 3.3V power supply, not 3.3V, to the two pins (3.3V and Gnd). This seems clear and correct to me.

It is clear, as per the English language rules. It says HOLES so therefore refers to the 3.3V and GND “holes” ie, 1 of each.

If this were 3.3V and GND “hole” you would be correct to assume both use the same but in this case it refers to a multiple of.
