FEZ Cobra sneak peek

So, one of the reasons why the Cobra is in the FEZ category is because the board is already configured.

If you wanted to mass produce a device, you would never use something like an Arduino or a FEZ Domino. What you would use are an ATmega 328 or a USBizi, and you would configure your board around it, using only what you need. That is the difference between TinyCLR and the main GHI site, IMO. TinyCLr caters to people who wopuld like a preconfigured board, GHI caters to people who want a module that they can solder on to their custom PCB.

Well explained Chris, thanks.

thanks Chris & Chimp.
As I mentioned previously we don’t do mass production and WE WANT preconfigured board. Why? Because we are not like you guys, we are developers working with computer and server only and not sensors that is why we like what is Freaking Easy to add functionalities to app or doing some data capture. If you go to an electronic specialist it cost you a billion just for the design, we asked, we did , we learnt.

Anyway when I ordered my fez domino and components it was for me not for work then forget what I said. I fit in your web site because I’m a beginner with this techno. I had thoughts when I saw the fez cobra capabilities but obviously I was wrong. End of the story.

I will not mentioned it again .I promised

Cheers to you guys

Hey Crorbal,

I guess what the others are saying is that it’s easy to choose what you want to do when you have options that mean you can use one code base and different platforms. EMX, USBizi, Fez Domino and shortly Cobra, basically pick one that suits your needs and go! Also, since we’re all pretty passionate about Fez (because it’s so freakin easy!) we might come off sounding passionate - perhaps you took that as a little over-protective, but as you probably see I think we’re all pretty relaxed here (except when we drink too much coffee  ).

The difference in all these options is really the starting price of the module, and the inbuilt features. If you buy a Fez Domino, $75, or you can buy the USBizi chip for $25, and make your own “domino” equivalent. EMX module is what, $75? and the Cobra likely in the $150 area. So there are options you can use to drive out cost, if that’s important. If what you do with the product means it’s $2000 for instance, then the difference between the options you can choose to use may or may not be important; but you can control it more if you want. And once again, .Net Micro isn’t necessarily the way to address a specific “problem” or task, but it is pretty good for embedded level gear, where Beagleboard is not really targetted at the same market, and (I’m sure) has it’s own strengths.

Like most things these days, there’s the “cost” of doing something yourself (use a base module or chip") versus doing something in a prepackaged form that you don’t need the full features of. Sometimes that has other costs too, like for you you’d need someone with hardware skills that you have admitted you don’t have, to do much more than connect what you have in Domino or Cobra.

For me, the Domino met my needs, and it looks like Cobra will be overkill (desireable overkill, that’s for sure!!!). Now to get CFO approval and wait to place my Cobra order

corbal, please feel free to say anything you have in mind. Every single user’s opinion is very important to us. I (and other users) are only trying to clarify things out(with extra passion). This info would benefit other users reading the forum. Defiantly no hard feeling are intended

Thanks Chimp appreciated.
If I have been quiet these days; it’s just I was supposed to receive my board last week but when I contacted the distributor, he told me they did a small mistake and they didn’t have it in stock when I ordered X( . Then GHI lead time 3 weeks + their lead time…

I started the wiki page for the my project. I’ll see what I can do without the board.

We are having problems keeping up with demand…everyone is loving FEZ

The good news is that we have a very large batch almost ready so we should be able to get FEZ Domino and FEZ Mini to everyone…
…now to see how we can get FEZ Cobra in stock

Hello Chimp,

Hope you’re doing well. I Just wanted to know if you ship out this large batch of fez domino you were talking about…?? Still waiting and no news form the distrib :frowning:

Thanks

We have shipped all domino orders to all customers and distributors. No back orders…and we have plenty in stock now
