What would the effect be if an analog pin gets driven negative? Say -500mv? I imagine it would read 0, but would there be damage done?

There are limiting values on page 35 of LPC2387 datasheet.
It say -0.5V to 5V. This is the absolute limit and you should NEVER goes below that.
Take into account the noise you could have.
