Rewire Module

@ godefroi - that works for me. Certainly allows the most flexibility.

Sure it is. If I want to map module pin #7 to pin #2 and I plug the module into the wrong side of the Rewire module then Iā€™ll be mapping pin #2 to pin#7

How much interest is there here, and what price point is a good target? The Gadgeteer sockets are $0.50 per (need two) from Architect, the cables are $1.50 from the same source, the board is $1 per from Seeed, in green, with the standard HASL finish. Going lead-free and black makes the boards significantly more expensive. The header in the middle is about $0.40 plus shipping.

The absolute rock-bottom cost here, then, is $4 plus shipping, without leaving any room for handling costs (profit). Assembled, theyā€™d be significantly more expensive, because hand-soldering two sockets per board would take some time.

Iā€™m willing to have the boards made and mail out kits, but Iā€™m not really eager to do the soldering unless thereā€™s meaningful profit in it for me.

Drop the cables. Drop the headers. How about $5 for a kit with just the PCB + sockets. How much more for black?

this would be very cool but for the EU it would need to be lead free, i guess this will push the price up.

For 10 at a time in black, the price goes from $1 per to $3 per (still not RoHS). In 50s, the price goes from $1 per to $1.30 per (still not RoHS). In 50s, in black, with the ENIG finish (this is what OSH Park uses, the nice gold finish), RoHS compliant, theyā€™re $2.80 per. In 50s, black, with lead-free HASL finish, theyā€™re $1.40 per.

Right. That makes sense, but thatā€™s a matter of how the rewiring is done, not necessarily which socket needs to be in/out. Personally, Iā€™d just use our PTouch labeler to add labels once the pin mapping is set up. Simple and removable.

@ devhammer - youā€™ll never use it to connect 2 modules or 2 mainboards togetter, right? So, for the same PCB price, put the Module/Mainboard label on it and your done. Your printer roll will cost more then 0$ I suppose

Wowā€¦ I was excited that they added the black option. Not so much nowā€¦ :frowning:

I ordered some PCBs (the dirt cheap ones), itā€™ll be several weeks before they arrive (Seeed is slower than OSH Park). Iā€™ll update when they get here.

Sorry, only saw this thread now.

One observation: The ā€œoutā€ socket should be reversed, as it should be placed as if on a mainboard, notch towards the edge of the board.

This canā€™t be done without major work. ā€œXā€ socket requires pull up resistors on the I2C lines, ā€œIā€ socket outlaws pullup resistors on the I2C linesā€¦ :frowning:

:frowning: Bummerā€¦ I guess we really need that I2C hub then.

How about a module that convers ā€œIā€ to ā€œXā€?

You mean an ā€œXā€ I2C module that would serve as a proxy for the ā€œIā€ module? Interesting ideaā€¦ The hardware based hub would probably be more efficient though.

Iā€™ve made a few of these available on my store: http://3ln.org/Store#ecwid:category=0&mode=product&product=14679551

Note the warnings on that page. The cable is backwards, the next revision will fix that issue.

Looks great!

Just to clarifyā€¦ The X2 socket is to be mounted as drawn, right? Youā€™re just saying that in the next version it will be rotated 180 deg?

In my original post, I had said I would pre-order 5. Your shopping cart says you only have 5. I donā€™t want to hog them all. So, hang onto two for me and if someone doesnā€™t claim the rest in the next couple days then Iā€™ll take whatever is left. Ok?

Yes, exactly. I actually have 11, but if everyone needs two sockets with each one, Iā€™ll run out before I can sell them. If you donā€™t want or need sockets, feel free to take 5. I have more on order (both boards and sockets).

Does the item listed in your store for $3 include sockets? If so, then Iā€™d rather wait and just get them with the sockets (as a kit). My stock of sockets is getting depleted also. How about if I go ahead and place the order for 5 and you ship them after your new supply comes in. You can keep the current available stock for others that might need them. I donā€™t have anything in the works today that requires these. So, a couple weeks delay in shipping is not a problem.

No, theyā€™re $3 without sockets, or $4.50 if you want sockets. If youā€™re buying several, youā€™re better off getting your sockets from Architect, as he sells them cheaper. Heā€™s where Iā€™m getting them anyway. I do have more on order, so I expect that by the end of next week Iā€™ll have plenty more.

Gotcha. Order placed. No rush on any of it. Thanks!
