What is used on current-generation CPUs is LGA, or Land Grid Array. It’s like BGA but without the balls. They’re just pads, which make contact with springy contacts in the socket.
I was thinking of a Land Grid Array (LGA 2011 - Wikipedia) Which is inverted from this configuration.
