Converting step/3ds/stl files to Adobe Illustrator

@ Gary - So we are not going to get those nice looking 3D pdf files for the new products?

@ iamin - I am working on it but unfortunately it won’t be in the immediate future

Thanks Gary.

I’m just making some custom laser cut enclosures for my boards and modules (I almost enjoy that as much as programming)

The STEP files are the easiest for me to use, since I can convert them in Design Spark Mechanical to files that adobe illustrator likes (which I use for the enclosure cutouts)

The .BRD files are the next easiest, since they also have outlines of components, and I can export from Eagle to files that adobe illustrator likes - but I have to edit them more to get rid of all the other extraneous stuff.

There is also sometimes a difference between the two, as to where a component is. If that is the case, do you know if one is more accurate than the other?

The 3D PDF files are nice to look at, but not really helpful other than getting a visual idea.

They do look better than the actual product though. The image of the back of the N18 module in the catalog looks like it was reworked several times

3D PDFs are very nice when:
a) user does not have 3D program to open step files
b) user want to do quick and simple distance measurements

Overall, I was very impressed when I saw it. It makes GHI products look more professional/refined.

P. S. And it is not that easy to make those 3D PDFs the right way. I know from my little experience ;D

I agree. They look super-duper professional. Whoever created those at GHI should have their salary doubled.

And I need to learn to ā€œeditā€ my posts instead of ā€œquotingā€ them, so I dont have to delete them later.

@ mtylerjr - I would advise getting yourself a set of digital calipers like these http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/electronic-digital-calliper-n48aa

dirt cheap from eBay. I have a set and they are as good as the expensive professional ones at 20x the price.

Hey, I posted a new board I was working on, and all the info got deleted…

Wow! Nice copy of Raptor board. GHI probably would not agree with the choice of name.

Edit: and GHI logo

Just to clarify, I’m not really creating a board…and especially not a ā€œraptor IIā€

I was just being cheeky.

I am installing the tools required to model a custom module…and I thought I wold put up that as a silly, obvious joke… but it seems to have made a few people nervous. Sorry about that.

I wish I had the expertise to create a quad core gadgeteer board… but sadly I don’t.

I do like eagleUp and sketchUp though. I wish the ghi component models were still available.

Repeating my request for Gary.

Still looking for Step files for:

Hydra+ Mainboard (Gary says none exists)
L1 Camera Module
Smart Multcolor LED Module
Compass Module

@ iamin took care of the Hydra+, http://www.ghielectronics.com/community/forum/topic?id=18430&page=1#msg183297

For the other ones, we are looking through server backups to see if they were ever created.
