Backlight control on 128x64 LCD module

I just purchased two 128x64 LCD modules from GHI. It appear that the LCD backlight LED is connected to 5V on the module via jumper JP3. I assume that a limiting resistor must be on the LCD glass itself. I think it should be possible to connect JP3 to a PNP transistor to allow switching the backlight on/off.

Has anyone ever tried this?

Yes you can add a transistor to control the backlight.
